  • @philsenior77 Serious point – I wonder to what extent the govt's difficulties derive from their inability to use the language effectively? #
  • (1) It's probably bad form to say so, especially since it's free, but the format of The Global Mail is awkward and uninviting. #
  • (2) The absence of a vertical scroll function is counter to everything that a web browser is designed to accomplish. #
  • (3) You cannot conveniently print or save an article for later use. You can't send it to the cloud for later reading on, say, an iPad. #
  • (4) In practical terms, as a fairly easy to please reader, I had to remember to look at it today. Quality isn't enough. Practicality matters #
  • (5) A scrolling ticker in the middle of the screen is the most appalling design feature of all, akin to that old obsession with Flash. #
  • @cgdavey Readability – is that an app? #
  • @bleeters @GrogsGamut I haven't tried it on the iPad yet. I still do the bulk of my online reading on a desktop PC. #
  • @trib It isn't even attractive to look at. The header is stuck permanently at the top, wasting space. #

  • @PuppyOnTheRadio You must be joking… I should be able to print to PDF, like I do with nearly every other publication I subscribe to. #
  • @trib That's right. I don't use things like Instapaper – it's another set of operations to go through. Web page and print option is me. #
  • @SeanNic I will but I do most of my reading on a desktop. iPad is strictly for convenience when on the move – don't use it around the house. #
  • @nifmoran I just have a philosophical objection to having to use a third-party application to use a web page. Clunky and wasteful of time. #
  • @deniswright I don't think he went far enough… #
  • (6) I've had a play with The Global Mail on the iPad and I think it's worse. Loads slowly, can't pinch & expand, even harder to see index. #
  • Mr. Hockey on #Lateline .. #
  • @kcarruthers But it's hardly gorgeous anyway! I read by scrolling up and down, re-reading, referring back to earlier points, etc. Can't here #
  • @kcarruthers Compare ProPublica: http://t.co/0Fwn1j7A – plenty of white space, no flashing bits and bobs, lots of links inviting action #
